Has someone already hit you with the “What’s Your New Year Resolution?” question?
Look, I stopped doing New Year’s Resolutions after purchasing a Peloton bike, an Orange Theory Membership, and a juicer… and used none of them!
Except the juicer; my juicer is pretty bomb. But I just used it yesterday for the first time after owning it since the pandemic began.
The point is, I don’t want to change; I want to improve. I want to become a better person today than I was yesterday.
Have you ever heard of the 1% rule? It’s called the principle of ‘aggregate marginal gains,’ and it’s the idea that if you improve by just 1% consistently, those small gains will add up to remarkable improvement.
So no, I don’t want to lose 20 pounds by March. I do, however, want to build muscle and reduce my sugar intake. cough…mixed drinks
I don’t want to simply become a better parent, but I want to be more intentional about the moments I share with my children and engage them on a level that they can connect to. Carving out time can be challenging as a single parent, a working woman, and still trying to find work-life balance with friends, family, and my teens. 1% surely sounds better than 180 degrees, right? Baby steps!
So the next time someone asks you what your New Year Resolution is, tell them it is simply to be a better you, one step at a time.
Remember, the journey to a better you is not measured in grand gestures, but in the small, consistent steps you take each day. Embrace the power of the 1% rule, and watch your cumulative efforts blossom into remarkable growth. You are not defined by the resolutions you make; you are empowered by the commitment to be a better version of yourself, one step at a time.
You got this!
